The largest animal in history is the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), and yes, it is still alive today! Blue whales can grow up to 98 feet (30 meters) in length and weigh as much as 200 tons, making them the largest animals to have ever lived on Earth, even surpassing the largest dinosaurs.
Blue whales inhabit all major oceans but are considered endangered due to past extensive whaling. They feed primarily on krill and are known for their deep, resonant vocalizations that can travel for hundreds of miles underwater. While their population is slowly recovering thanks to conservation efforts, they still face threats like ship strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, and climate change.
